Bobbin Lace And Orchid

It's a very windy day here in Oklahoma, in fact too much as far as I am concerned. It did get in the high 60 degrees though and I like it. I have finish my outside edge of my bobbin lace Easter egg. It's pictured here:

Also pictured is my orchid blooming again. My son, Clyle, gave it to me about 3 years ago. I guess it likes my kitchen window that faces west. And to be sure, I love it. I have really enjoyed it.

Bobbin Lace

I have picked up another hobby (like I really needed another hobby) LOL. Anyway, I have become interested in working bobbin lace. Mind you, I am very much a beginner and like my other hobbies, it takes practice, practice. It started when four of us went to the Paducah Quilt Show last April. One friend, Vickie, took us to a lace show while we were there. Well, to make a long story short, the four of us bought the supplies we needed to start our new hobby. But, when we got home we had to find someone locally to teach us. We did and we have also used each other in our process of learning. I am currently working on an Easter egg (shown here) and I am not sure if I am doing it right. My pattern stitches are consistent. The main thing is I enjoy it. It can be frustrating at times because most of the time we only have the pattern with no instructions on which stitch to do. I am going to get there though and not give up. I am not giving up my quilting (that is my first love), just trying to expand some new learning techniques.

National Lace Day

Here are a couple of pictures of Vickie, myself and Carol at the National Lace Day event held in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. It was not planned what we were wearing, it just happened that way. So we named ourselves the two pumpkins and the vine. We had a great time. Shopped some and participated in some demos such as shuttle tatting, paper bobbins for bobbin lace and how to make paper beads. Oh yeah, did I mention we went there to brush up on our bobbin lace. Did not get quite there. We were too busy learning everything else. After all we needed more hobbies. We already are quilters,knitters,crochet, beading, bobbin lace, machine embroidery. I guess we are working on our bucket list. We still have thread painting to do and I am sure we will find other things to learn and do. Inside joke--"what about it" and "hey, why are my covers all on your side of the bed and on the floor too" We have so much fun.

Renegade Quilter's Fabric Challenge

Last weekend my small quilters group had a retreat. Nine of us attended where we pieced 2 twin quilts and one queen size for the lodge. It was work but we managed to get done and now they are off to the longarm quilters. At our last retreat we were given fabric as a challenge. We do this each time and the ladies come up with some creative ideas. I came up with "Queenie" my soft sculptured doll. Her clothes are the fabric we were to use. Now I am thinking about what to do with our next fabric challenge. I have to have it done by next March which gives me plenty of time or not. I did not get "Queenie" done until 2 weeks before our retreat date. Decisions, decisions.

My Great Grandson- Asher

My great grandson will be 3 in Nov and he's growing to be "a big boy" now. You can read about him on my sidebar called "A Prayer For Asher" . He is a very special little boy having survived a rare brain cancer tumor. He has been through a lot for such a young man. His Grandma Britta writes about him and I have been able to watch him grow. I love the stories she writes about him. I just had to do a little bragging about him. So Asher Great Grandma Gale loves you so very much.

Hot!!

Last time I posted and I asked how hot is hot? Well, it got even hotter this weekend as the
ac went out. But now, I have a happy face as the ac got fixed this morning. Enjoyed a day of sewing yesterday with my Sat. Group. Mama C taught a table runner and showed us how to do flying geese another way and they turned out perfect. This was a small project and I am still working on my UFO's. I have 3 quilt tops finished now. I am, though, having to take a break to get a challenge done for our Renegade Retreat in August. I am really cutting this challenge too close to the due date. But I will get something done.

How Hot Is Hot?

Well, let me tell you how hot is hot. 22 Days of it being over 100 degrees here in Oklahoma. 12 of those days one right after the other. This past Saturday it was 110 degrees. And the nights are not much cooler- 80 to 95 degrees. Thank goodness for the air conditioning, but I am sure we will have quite a large electric bill. Besides the heat, we have been in a terrible drought here. The grass is brown and crispy along with the farmer's pastures. I have heard on the news that the farmer's are starting to sell their cattle because there is very little hay. It seems that all around the country people are having their problems with floods, forest fires, etc. I pray one day the weather will come to those who need rain, that it stops for those don't need it and for the fires come to a halt.

I have finished piecing two of my UFO's. I think I have a PHD in quilting (Projects Half Done). I have vowed that this summer I am working on those projects and not starting any new big quilts until September. I probably won't even make a dent in those projects, but I have at least made a start. Here are the 2 I have finished piecing.

Happenings That Have Happened

Back in the beginning of April we had a Guild Retreat. I was the door prize chairman and we had plenty of door prizes. The classes went very well and was enjoyed by all 23 members participating. We made portable ironing boards for all to take home (Shown above). The retreat committee put the final touches to the retreat the day before. The classes were making bags for a hot iron to take home, a block saver roll up to carry unfinished blocks home. The committee worked very hard and I think it was the best retreat ever. We had show and tell while having lunch one day. We also gave David, the Camp Manager a quilt for the services and hospitality he has given us throughout the years

Then--2 weeks after the Retreat, 4 of us were off to the Paducah Quilt Show. It was my first time. I had so much fun with my buddies. It was a wonderful show despite all the water and flooding. It did not slow us down a bit. And to think the flooding has gotten even worse. My prayers are with those that live there. I think we went to Hancocks 3 different times as well as to Walmart. Some places they could call us by name. One of those places was the Lace Guild where we learned to make a bracelet and the 4 of us came home with bobbin lace supplies. What 1 has the rest had to buy also, so all 4 of us bought. LOL. Carol and Vickie had a class on Wed and Fri. On Fri, Sue, Carol and I took an EQ7 class Mary Ellen Kranz. She is a wonderful lady and it was a fun class to take. After being there a week, it was time to go home. Had to take a longer way home because of all the water, but we arrived home safely. Many thanks to Vickie for all of the driving she did. She did a great job. I have lots of pictures, but these are just few posted here.

Quilt Retreat

Last weekend was the Renegade Quilters Retreat. Each time we meet one of us hands out either a fat quarter or 1/2 yard of fabric to each (we usually have 9, but this time only 6 attended) as a challenge to make something. This fabric was what I handed out last August. The fabric is the border on the left side here. I am telling you I was so proud of what the girls did with it. Another group voted on which one was their favorite and the winner would get the prize money. All of us gave $5. Vickie was the winner.

Retreat Workshop

I had the most wonderful time with my most wonderful friends. We had a retreat workshop that will be coming up the first weekend in April. We worked hard yesterday and I just know this will be a really good retreat for our ladies in the guild. It is always fun being friends whether I am quilting or not. I hope to have pictures after the retreat so I can show them here, but for now it is all hush, hush.

My first retreat of the season will be this next weekend with the same friends. We will have six at this retreat. I am looking forward to it. I am curious as to what the ladies did with the challenge fabric I handed out at our last retreat. It's always fun to see what they come up with.

Then the first weekend in April is our Guild retreat. It will be fun to see the mystery quilts sewn together with the different fabrics. I hope they like the surprises the retreat committee came up with.

Then it's off to Paducah with friends. My first trip there. It will be exciting to see what my friend Vickie has planned for us. It sounds like so much fun.

Shelter Dogs Of Oklahoma

My son Clyle and his wife Crystal run Shelter Dogs Of Oklahoma, a nonprofit organization, where they help find homes for dogs that come from the pound. These are rescue dogs and the site is on my sidebar. I have one of the dogs I adopted, a boxer named Joy. She is 11 months old now. I have posted her on this blog a few times. Last week Clyle asked me to make a dog coat with "Adopt Me" on it. I put their logo on it and their web site. I usually work on my quilts and never thought I would be making a quilted dog coat, but here it is.

Feeling Scrappy

I got my "Feeling Scrappy" done as far as it being a quilt top. Now I need to quilt it. I got this idea from Quiltville on Bonnie Hunter's site. I love her ideas of what to do with scraps. I also made a small table topper that needs to be quilted. It's starting to feel good getting inspired again.

I have added something new to my sidebar and it is called "My Journey" and it is my niece's blog.
She is going through cancer treatments. She is a very strong and determined lady. I still have Asher's blog about his journey through his brain tumor. They are both in my prayers every day.
Asher has been through a tough journey and he is a tough little guy. Connie and Asher are very dear to my heart and I am blessed to have them as part of my family.

Inspiration

Sometimes I need a little inspiration and I read my niece's blog about her journey going through her recent double mastectomy. She is so strong, upbeat and just beautiful inside and out. She is a nurse and was so very caring to my mother and sister. So after reading her blog I felt her inspiration and now I am ready to work on a quilt project. Sometimes I just need a little boost and say "get going". So I am working on a scrappy quilt that I found on Bonnie Hunter's site using her leader ender concept. Just using my scraps and knowing it will not make a dent, but so what. I am going to be productive. So off I go to my sewing room.

New Year 2011

I ended with 2010 not being very inspired, but enjoyed Christmas. So I am back to working on projects both old and new. I did not do any projects from Dec 14-Dec 31. I went to the guild this past Tues and worked with some scraps and yesterday I went to Chickasha with friends to sew at the Quilt Shop. I have been busy today and plan to sew some this evening. Will meet with my Saturday group tomorrow all day to sew and have some lunch. Not looking forward to a cold week this coming week. Weatherman says we might have some snow. We haven't had any yet and feel so sorry for those that have had more than their share. So I am off to my sewing room to get inspired. Happy New Year everyone.

LOL I know, that sentence makes sense to me as I belong to several groups and what I don't finish in one I will finish in another. I have also finished piecing a Christmas table topper that I started in my Tuesday Guild and finished in my Thursday Group in Chickasha. LOL Oh well, it all eventually gets done.

My husband surprised me with a gift tonight, 9 week old boxer puppy. Her name is Alli. My son has "Shelter Dogs of Oklahoma", so Alli is a rescue puppy. I am so thrilled to have her and I think she is so beautiful.

Butterfly Quilt Finished

As you can see I am making an honest effort in getting some UFO's done. I pinned my Baby Butterfly Quilt and it is now ready for me to machine quilt. Then I plan to quilt my Glory Bound quilt. But, first I want to show it at the NNNQG on Tuesday for show and tell. So I went to my stash of quilt tops and decided it was time to get the butterfly top quilted. Once I get it quilted I will embroider the antennae.

Today I finished piecing a UFO Quilt Top called Glory Bound. I bought the kit several years ago and decided in 2009 to put it together. Well, I learned a lesson here and that is when buying a quilt kit do not wait years to work on it. I ran out of fabric on my last six blocks. So, I dug into my civil war fabric stash and came up with enough fabric to finish the blocks. I am, though, happy with the end result. But I do have other kits that I bought at the same time as Glory Bound. You see, there was a period of time that I bought kits as it was easy not to have pick out the fabric myself. Since then, I am back to picking out the fabric myself. Here's my Glory Bound Quilt Top.

Today I quilted a wall hanging I have had in the closet for years. It is called "Friends" and several of us participated in this project. I think there was ten of us and each got enough quilt blocks to make the wall hanging. Now I just have to put the binding on tomorrow. Another UFO done. YEAH!!!

have been trying to work on my UFOs. So I made up a huge long list to work on for 2010. So far I have finished my floral elegance machine embroidery blocks and quilted and bound my Road To Dixie Quilt. So now I am moving forward to something else on my list. I have also made an oven mitt on some fabric that I practiced quilting with my new gadget called the Quilt Halo. Here are pictures of what I have done so far.

I'm Back

I'm Back and have spent way to much time on facebook, especially playing games. I probably won't quit playing games, but trying not to play as much. I am going to try working some on this blog. I am currently quilting my Road to Dixie quilt and nearly have the main portion done and then it is on the to the borders. But in the meantime here are some of the projects that I may not have shown here.
My great grandson had to have a brain tumor removed at age 11 months and I made him a doo rag when we though he was going to go through chemo, but as it turns out he is currently going through proton radiation treatments.

It's been A Long Time

It has been a long time since I last posted on my blog. I have had a number of things that took priority. I do hope to do better here now. I finished a small project this past Monday. It is a cheater's preprinted Christmas Holiday Vest. My friend, Mama C, made a vest and that is where I got my inspiration to make mine. Thanks Mama C.

Trey had a birthday yesterday and he is a big "1 year old" He had 17 people (includes kids) at his birthday party. All Trey got for his birthday was a shoe. lol His mom and dad did make him a cake. And yes he had presents. He like what this Great Grandma and Grandpa gave him. He loves music and this toy gave him plenty of noises. Happy Birthday Trey. I love you much.

I enjoy reading before going to bed as it helps me to fall asleep.

Am I A "Bag" Lady?

It has been a while since I have posted anything on this blog. I have not forgotten about it, it is just that I have been on facebook. I have found out how much time that can take up. In the past few days I have made a couple of new purses. I don't know which one I like more. I guess you could say I am excited about both of them. I know that I have enjoyed making both of them. I am finding I can really get into making new bags. the first one pictured is called "The Potato Chip" bag. I will like this one to carry to quilt guild meetings and such because I can just carry some ID and some cash in it and not have to carry a large purse each time. My next one is called "Charm Party Tote" and because of the title I made it with very bright and cheerful fabric. I just love the fabric combinations on this one.

Family Reunion

Words cannot express the joy my husband and I have for holding the family reunion at house. I personally had so much fun preparing for it and then having everyone arriving for it. The four out of six brothers are sitting on the porch. My husband is sitting on the far right. From the left is John from California, Ron from Florida and Robin from Tenn. Ron's wife Anna also came. They got to meet my boys, grandsons and great grandsons and the wives for the first time. Words cannot express the joy our family had.

Pokadot Tote

Last night our president of the Guild taught us a tote bag made out of 5 inch squares. The class was so much fun and many of the ladies turned out for this class. The room was abuzz with chattering and laughing. Our dinner was wonderful with a Mexican theme. I took brownies, which my husband got into before I left the house. But that's OK, I still had some for the ladies. Now I have a new tote to carry with me on next weekend's retreat.

My Friend Mama C

My friend Mama C, is the most wonderful friend to have. She has had to deal with things that if it were me, be an emotional wreck. Instead, she will keep me from being that way. She loves to laugh and is so very caring. But there is another side to her and that is she is so very, very talented. She is a quilter and I think she is a quilt artist. She has won many ribbons for her quilts. Along with that, she will help you with your quilting and she will teach you how to do it correctly. In fact some of us girls have come to really depend on her. I cannot begin to tell you the many things she helps us with, from what kind of thread to use, fabric choices, help with pattern instructions and ways to do a quilt easier, which stabilizer to use when machine embroidering and different techniques to use. I have learned so much about quilting through her knowledge. I have learned to be careful when seeing her "stuff" about saying how cute something is, as she may just give it to you. She did that just the other day when I saw a pincushion of hers and mentioned it. Before I knew it, it was mine. My friend, Mama C, is one of the strongest and talented (gifted) women I know and when I grow up, I want to be just like her (I'm older than she is, but she is my Mama C). Thank you Mama C.

Preparing for December Embroidery Retreat

In December I plan to go to a machine embroidery retreat. There will be six of us and we will all work on the same project. It will be a project with large designs and multiple hoopings, so I am practicing lining up the design. I have the center shown here and now I will play with lining up a border on each side. It's really fun doing something challenging.

Fabric Basket Thread Catcher

I have just been playing making small things that are quick to make. I saw this fabric basket at a site called Pink Penquin and really liked them. They can be made to any size and used for just about anything, from thread catcher, notions holder, spools of thread, etc. I am going to use this for a thread catcher when I go an all day sewing with our guild. I told my husband it was my newest purse and he said if I carried it, people would laugh. I did tell him what it was really for. This could also make a small Christmas present.

Butterfly Embroidered Purse

Last weekend I saw a lady carrying a purse that was made out of muslin and she had some machine embroidery on it. Well, I just thought it was so cute, so I have made one of my own this week. I embroidered "whimsical butterfly" on the front and just did four small butterflies on the back. I did not do any quilting on it, except for the gusset. I did use some brighter fabric for the inside, as you can see. I am telling you I can really get into this purse making and I seem to take notice when I see one being carried by someone else. It is just a small break from doing my quilts of which I have not given up doing. Sometimes it is nice to just get something small done and feel I have finished something. LOL I get inspired by Diane's blog at sewman maniac quilter. Her blog is on my sidebar. She comes up with the prettiest purses and totes. I enjoy reading her blog. Anyway, here are pictures of my purse being added to my purse collection.

My "Doings" This Past Week

This past Tuesday our Newcastle Quilt Guild had a class making a crazy patch purse. Everyone that participated in the class had a great, great time. It was so much fun seeing how different each purse turned out. At first I was not too sure I would like mine, but by the time I got done, I love it. I did not get to finish it that night, but got it done when I went to the Chickasha Churndasher's Quilt Guild on Thursday. The Churndasher's had a class on covering a box with a lid (shoe box) with fabric. That was a lot a fun. You can use them as gift boxes and for organizers in your home (sewing room, etc)

Grandma Has A New Baby

Mom and Dad presented me with a new baby. Oh, it is so, so cute. It was a little pinkish and I noticed how very cute the feet are. I just cooed and awed at this brand new baby. I kept saying how very sweet you are. The little eyes were just looking at me and it was very still while looking me. The hair was fluffy just like a newborn baby (which of course it is) Mom and Dad were a little worried about what my reaction would be, but they were pleased when they saw me. I am posting a picture so you can share in my joy. As you can see it is a baby bird (it's a cardinal) just out of the nest. Mom and Dad were at the living room window guarding their new young one. I just could not imagine what was going on and my first thought was a snake. So when I got up from the chair I could see what the excitement was all about. I was able to get close enough to take this picture. After I took the picture, I told Mom and Dad how beautiful it was and to keep it safe. Thanks Mom and Dad for sharing your beautiful little darling with me.

My Granddogs and New Craft Tote

This past week I have been babysitting my "Granddogs" while Dad and Mom are vacationing in Cancun. I let them play early in the morning because our weather has been getting to the 3 digit number and it's way too hot for them in the afternoon. This morning I play fetch with them and it was cooler for me also. The big long haired German Shepherd has been looking for Dad when she looks out the living room window. When she sees a dark gray truck out the window, she starts to perk up. Then I have to disappoint her and tell her it's not him. She a real good girl. Her name is Nila.

Now comes Jillian (Jill). She is a sweetie pie too. I have had her before and she has really calmed down. I guess that is because she has 3 playmates now. She and Nila play in the house together and it is so funny how delicate they are with each other.

That's the two big dogs and we are now down to the dachshunds. First there is Willie. Willie is rather chubby, but he is so sweet. When the big dogs get frisky, he stays out of the way, but then he is 5 years old. He is a big baby and is well behaved.

Last, but not least is Cricket, she is real fiesty, but affectionate. Our first day was spent on how she was getting out of the back yard. Well, I caught her and she is just small enough to squeeze through a gate opening. Well, we fixed that and now she has no choice but to play in the backyard. She is quite the character.

In between the dogs I did manage to finish making a craft tote bag. The front has two pockets, that are divided down the middle of the bag. The back has 4 pockets done the same way. I did not put pockets inside. It was not hard to make.

I have made my second purse. I used scraps left over from my jacket I made a couple of months ago. I really like this pattern and it was fairly easy. I really had fun making this and I may try doing some more.

My Sister's Lily

My sister passed away nearly 4 years ago. Time has just flown by. Jean always like her flower garden and one of the flowers that I always liked was a yellow day lily. I wanted to get one of the lilies from her yard. A nephew said he had some of them in pots and gave them to me. Well, I lost one of the pots. I did plant one close to the house wall so it would be protected from the weather and mainly from my husband mowing it down during the warm months. It never bloomed until this year and it was absolutely gorgeous. I would go out everyday to see how the buds were growing. Then this week I noticed it was close to opening up. I was fortunate to have 3 buds open. I am so excited about it and took pictures of this yellow lily. So now my memory of my sister's yellow lily has come full circle and brought me beautiful memories of her.

Renegade Quilter's Challenge

Well, Renegades, I have started my challenge for the August Retreat. It will be a quilt and it measures 80 x 97. Oh, Oh, whoops, I'm lying. Got a little carried away with that 1/3 yard of fabric. Well, let's try that again. Let's just say it's a quilt that measures 1" x 1". Oh gosh, that's not right either. My oh my, let's see if I can figure this out. It's a placemat or um a pot holder. OK, it's a bird, a plane, it's superquilter. Oh gee, I don't know. But here is the honest to goodness truth--it has to do with bluebirds. Now you try to figure it out.

Keeping Busy

Yesterday I went with Mama C and Princess of the UFO's to the Chickasha Churndashers Quilt Guild. I had a really good time and the ladies were so friendly. My buddies had been asking me to go with them for a while now and I finally had the day free to go. I worked on a UFO called New Ladies On The Block" quilt. It was a swap years ago that I never finished. It's been in the closet so long I forgot how I was putting the blocks together. Well Mama C and Princess UFO helped me with an idea on how to arrange the blocks. So thanks to them I just might get this UFO pieced together. We were there most of the day and they had a wonderful lunch prepared. It's always fun being with friends that are dear to my heart.

Today was another busy day with an eye appointment for DH. We stopped by Sam's Club to get some paper products. Then it was off to get this Great Grandma's new eye glass prescription filled.So now it is "better to see you with". Our errands were an all day thing and now I am really too tired to sew on anything. So will try to sew tomorrow. See ya.

Great Grandma's Visitors

I got a phone call this morning from my Grandson and Granddaughter saying they were bringing Asher out for a visit today. I was absolutely thrilled. Asher will be 7 months old in June and I am amazed at his progress. He now sits up and crawls all over the place. In fact you could not keep him on the lap quilt that is on the floor anymore. He is even trying to stand up along the couch, but just can't get that yet. There is no doubt in my mind that he will soon though. Asher and I talked for a long time til he got tired and fell asleep in my arms.

On another note, I started quilting my Road to Dixie quilt yesterday on my sewing machine. When I get done I will show a picture here on my blog.

Happy Memorial Day

On this day I think of my Dad, Mother and Sister. It may seem odd to others, but I talk to them and tell them how much I miss them. I know that I have three guardian angels. I also think of other family members that have served our country. I am very proud to be a part of a family that was full of love, joy and happiness.

Mama Two's Block

We have elected new officers in NNNQG and that means the outgoing President chooses a block of her choice as the President's Block. Mama Two chose "snowmen" and the kicker was that she wanted to have the snowman showing the makers personality. It took me awhile to think of how I could do my block for her. We all tease in our quilt guild and give each other nick names and at times I have been called Queen, because of my antics I pull. I also have a collection of frogs and all but one were given to me. I carry my family of frogs to retreats so they won't miss me. This explains why my snowman is wearing a crown and has a silly frog beside her (note the mischievious look on this frog). I could not resist to also add some wording to Queen Snowman. (or rather snow woman).

Another UFO Bites The Dust

Today I finished piecing the Mystery quilt from the NNNQG 2008 retreat. Now I have both 2008 and 2009 retreat quilts pieced together. I still have to do our President's block for our outgoing President, but after that I plan to do some quilting on these Mystery quilts and my Road to Dixie Quilt. It seems I stay behind in everything from piecing to the finished quilting. Plus I like to machine embroider. I guess that is better than me just not doing anything. I am more than glad to have these quilts put together. Shown to the right is the 2008 Mystery Quilt called "Cat's Meow".

My "Great" Darling

Trey, who is now 8 months old, came to visit Great Grandma and Grandpa yesterday on mother's day. He can now sit up and scoots around. It won't be long now and his Mama and Daddy will be chasing him. When he sees something of interest, such as his Daddy's drink, he will scoot to reach it. He was a joy to watch how he is maturing and growing so fast. He now has his first tooth on the bottom. It is so neat to hear him jabber, laugh, and watching his eyes. He is so observant and his eyes really show his personality.

NNNQG Retreat 2009 Mystery Quilt

Here is my version of the Retreat Mystery Quilt. I have had the focus fabric (outside border) for many years. Phyllis, owner of the Chickasha Quilt Shop, Steelman's, helped me pick out the rest of the fabrics for the quilt. I think she did a really good job. The quilt is called "Trail to Paducah". Believe me I did plenty of "frogging" (rippit) on piecing this quilt. I am doing a "happy dance" now that it is put together. Now it goes in the pile of quilt tops for the final quilting.

More Socks

I finally finished the mate to the first sock I made. The first sock I made to0 big and have since learned where to stop on the foot measurement for my foot. Now that I am getting the hang of it, I am on to knitting my third pair. I am really enjoying making socks now. We have had plenty of rain this morning and now can see the pond from the living room window. It's not a day suitable for outside work, so guess what--that means it can be a quilting or knitting day. Retreat Has Come And Gone

Our NNNQG Retreat was last weekend and I think we had 21 ladies attend. We all had fun, but don't ask about how we did on the mystery quilt. Several of us had problems turning our blocks wrong and just plain sewing them wrong. Believe me I had my share of mistakes. The quilt pattern was called "The Trail to Paducah". Karen was the first to be done.

Carol finished second.

And for guessing the time of the first quilt to be done, Sue received some trinkets for her ear.

Of course, it is expected at our retreats to pull jokes or pranks on each other. Well, this next picture it sure looks like it, but I really think they were just in a conversation. I interpret this picture as saying--Tina, "honest Sue, I did not do it" And Sue is saying "Uh, ha" But, Tina, you have the wrong hand up because when you swear to something, it is usually your right hand and not your left. LOL

Then there is Sarge and her troops where Sarge is showing the girls how to exercise.

One of the main attractions at Camp Canyon are the goats in the Canyon. The herd has grown now to 17. We have seen the black ram knocking his horns with the others. We love the goats.

Busy Week

I finished a pair of socks today. I wanted to have them done because on Friday it is NNNQG Retreat Weekend and I wanted to be able to wear them. I have been busy packing here and there. I will probably take a couple of projects with me, not that I will get to them. We have a mystery quilt going on for the group project. So I may end up just working on it. But just in case, I have something else to work on. Afterall, I don't want to have idle hands.

Our 3rd Saturday group got our Disappearing Ninepatch going last Saturday. I am making mine very scrappy. That is one of the extra projects I am taking to the Retreat. I am also taking along last years mystery quilt. I did not get to attend last year because of a hip replacement, but I did start that mystery quilt later.

It should be a fun weekend and the weather will be just like summer time. There will be 23 ladies on this retreat. I know I plan to have a good time.

Friday and Saturday Happenings

On Friday I spent the day with Princess of the UFO's and Mama Two. We were gone all day shopping at a couple of Alco stores where quilt shop fabric is very reasonable. They sell pieces of fabric of up to maybe 5 yards at a very good price. Usually the fabric is $3.99 a yard, but I managed to find some at $1.00 a yard and one at $.50 a yard. I think I was queen of the bargains this day. The three of us had a wonderful time.

Saturday was cut up day for me. I cut out the mystery quilt our guild is doing in two weeks at our retreat. I also started cutting scraps for the disappearing ninepatch my 3rd Saturday group is doing next Saturday.

My Little Darlings

I titled this "My Little Darlings" because I have a friend that says that when she starts talking about her "little darlings". Her stories about them just keep me in "stitches". (pun intended here for my friend) Well, my little darlings are my two great grandsons, Trey and Asher, ages 5 and 6 months. They are now at that age where personalities are showing. Both smile and are happy babies and so is this great grandma. I love this picture and I call it the face off (by the way they are cousins) Great Grandpa is holding Trey and Asher's mama is holding him.
In this next picture it's lunch time as you can tell by the food on his face.
Trey loves his jump toy and is a real show off in it.

Trey decided to let Asher try his jump toy and it did not take Asher long to play with all of the things on it.

Tote Bag

I made a tote bag out of the nine patches I made previously. In fact the whole purse is made from scraps left over from my Road To Dixie Quilt. There are two small pockets on the inside along the sides of the purse. One is very handy for my cell phone. Change and business cards are kept separately in small coin purses. And of course there is my Quilt Money purse there also. I made the handles so they are detachable and are buttoned on. So I had a learning process of making buttonholes and sewing on the buttons with my Elegante2.

9 Patches

I had left over strips when I finished piecing my Road To Dixie Quilt. So I decided to make some 9 patches. I'm not sure yet what I will do with them. Each fabric has 3 nine patches and I have several projects in mind. Example, a purse, mini quilt, or even a mini quilt with some machine embroidery in between them. It will be fun to see what I come up with. I just could not bring myself to waste the scraps.

Added New Book To Bookshelf

I just finished reading a book titled "A Single Thread" by Marie Bostwick. A friend loaned it to me and it's about how a single thread can tie quilting friends together and how a personal crisis can them bond them together. It's a good read and I would recommend it. You can see it on my bookshelf that is on the sidebar.

Bluebird

I opened the curtains in the dining room and lo and behold what did I see with my wondering eyes. No--it's not Santa. We blue birds that are always fleeting around the yard. This morning I had two I could catch with the camera through the window that were on the old cellar out back. When I first saw the brightest one, its back was to me and he was so blue. I wasn't able to capture that pose, but did catch a few and some with the female friend.

Stack and Whack Fan Quilt

Yep, I've started another quilt and I don't even have UFO's finished yet. What am I going to do with me? I know---just have fun and that is just what I did yesterday. We had an all day sew-in at the Church yesterday and I finally got the chance to learn about the Stack and Whack Fan. A bestest friend, now called Princess of the UFO's, taught us. And oh, she had Mama "C" as her assistant. (We couldn't make it on our own without Mama "C".) We had 16 ladies present. Now some were working on their on projects, but quite a few of us took the fan class. All of the fan fabrics turned out so pretty and fabrics that you wouldn't think would work turned out so cute. We had so much fun yaking and laughing. There is one that I shall call Mama Two, who tries to keep me in line by reminding me of my age. Mind you Mama "C", Mama Two, and Princess of the UFO's are younger than me by about 20 years. They call me "Queen". I am not sure about that title, but it is all in fun. For lunch we had salads and lots of desserts. Here are some of the pictures of my "fans".

On A Roll With Road To Dixie Quilt

I am on a roll with my Road To Dixie quilt. I finished putting the borders on last night. Today I will get the backing done and sandwich the quilt together so I can machine quilt it on my sewing machine. This will be my second UFO for 2009 when I get it done. I am so excited about getting this quilt done.

Snow In March?

You betcha! We did not get the snow NW Oklahoma got, but we do have less than an inch. And to think the fruit trees are blooming as well as the early Spring flowers. The redbud trees are blooming and trees were starting to leaf out. And here it is March 28. Well it does happen here on occasion. Just when we think we are into Spring a freeze comes along and there goes the fruit trees. As they say around these parts "blink" and the weather will change. Here are the pictures I took this morning. The roads are just wet and it is supposed get up to 35 degrees to day.

Jacket Is "What It Is"

Not too long ago I posted a picture of my initial "jacket" in the making and my husband asked "What Is It" Well, now he can see it is truly a jacket. I finished it this morning and I absolutely love it. But he still is not sure. He really doesn't care for different fabric patterns mixed together in clothing, but loves them in a quilt. Thanks to Karen for helping me with the jacket. And I just might make another one, but for now I need to finish another UFO. So this is one new project done.

One UFO Done-Pink Lemonade

It's been a long time, but I have finally finished a UFO called Pink Lemonade. It is an Eleanor Burns pattern. I machine embroidered the flower block and I did the quilting on my sewing machine. I also made the label using machine embroidery. This quilt is going to be mailed to a special cousin of mine named Carol in Michigan. So if she reads my blog, the secret surprise will be out of the bag. lol That's one UFO down and 7 more to go for the year. My original goal is to get 8 UFO's done this year. Well, it's the middle of March and I have only one done. So to my friend, Vickie, don't worry about me catching up with you. I have to explain that Vickie is the fastest project finisher in the West. But then she is Grandma and I am "Great" Grandma so I am supposed to be slower (I think) and I am probably 20 years older than her. lol. Either way I am proud to at least have one UFO done. Now it's off to do my quilting on my jacket seeing that the class is Saturday.

"Cat" Our Outdoor Guest

"Cat" is a wild cat. We live where there is pasture around the house. Last fall a pair of kittens appeared for about a week, one white and one gray with black markings. For the past month "Cat" has from time to time slept on a bench on the front porch and at times on top of an old, run down cellar sunning himself or herself. When it sees us it runs away. So we just leave it alone so he or maybe she can enjoy some comfort without being bothered by anything. It's a healthy looking cat and does not appear to be hungry. "Cat" probably finds enough mice in the pasture. I managed to take a few pictures through the dining room window and as you can see he is not a small cat. I have wondered if this was the dark kitten I saw in the fall. I have never seen the white kitten again. No telling how long "cat" will stay to visit, but, we will just continue to leave it alone and enjoy seeing it once in a while. "Cat" is not bothersome and is quiet.

What Is It????

What is it?, my husband asked when he saw it on the floor. He said it was the strangest quilt he had ever seen. I said "It's a jacket can't you tell? He just frowned and walked away. Well, I have my doubts too. I am not sure I like my choice of the different blue fabric. But, I'll see when it is done on the 3rd Sat. I have it sandwiched with the flannel and the lining. So now it's off to be quilted. (by me, that is). If I don't like the fabric arrangement I can always try another one (maybe, lol) So here it is:

Stack and Whack Fabric

At the retreat last weekend I picked up fabric to do the Stack and Whack class on our Guild 5th Tuesday, but could not find fabric to trim the top of the fan. So, I was in Norman this morning and stopped by the quilt shop and found what I needed. Seen here is the fabric I am going to work with.

Great Grandbabies Are So Much Fun

I went to see one of my Great Grandsons, Asher, today with Great Grandpa and oh what fun I had talking to Asher. He smiles and coos and loved my red and blue flannel shirt I had on. What a joy he is. I also got to give him a bottle. He's about 4 months now and turns over. He wiggles enough to get off of his blanket on the floor. He's a sweetie for sure.

Last Weekend's Renegade Quilters Retreat

I was able to finish "It's A Wrap" Christmas quilt during last weekends Retreat. It took a while to get it pieced together, but now I am happy to move on to something else. I am almost finished with the main project we were to work on and in a few days I should be able to post a picture of it. I did get a sample block done of our next project for the August Renegade Retreat. And oh, we have a challenge to do using some bluebird fabric. We are not to tell anyone what we will do with the fabric-- It's A Secret! lol. Also, did I mention I bought some fabric??? Well, I wasn't the one "on a budget" (that's an inside joke for the person that said she was on a budget--somehow that budget got broken) The first day we went to the Alco store in Watonga and a friend drove us. The next day one of the gals showed a suggestion for a quilt to do in August (the one on the budget), so I said time to go back to the Alco store, so I drove. Then our last two days I bought lots of fabric from our favorite store -- Steelman's in Chickasha, better known as Phylis. Phylis comes on the retreat with us and you would not believe the fabric bolts she brought. Anyway, I shopped twice with her and bought. Our group emptied 19 bolts for her and she still had plenty of bolts left. It ended up that we were all very proud of our "fabric budget" when we finished shopping. I think our cars looked like this driving back home.

My Pride and Joy

This morning I had a surprise waiting for me in my email. My daughter-in-law sent me pictures of my oldest Great Grandson. He will be 6 months old this month. He is such a cutie as is my youngest Great Grandson who is about a month behind this one. It is hard to believe that almost six months has gone by since this one was born. It goes to show that time just flies by. I picked out the pictures I like the best and put them in a panorama style to show them off here. You can click on the picture to see a larger view of it. Renegade Quilter's Retreat

This next weekend is the Renegade Quilter's Retreat and I am excited. I love our retreats and we always have so much fun. We will be working on Christmas projects and I plan to take a few of my Christmas UFO's with me. I have started gathering my "stuff" to take. Today I really wanted to sew but just could not get to it as I am doing laundry, picking up around the house and finished a puzzle in between. Also made a Ham and bean soup a friend made. I called her to see how she made it. When I get back from the retreat I really need to de-clutter my sewing room. Happy March to all and don't forget the 3rd Saturday is National Quilting Day.

Spring Just Can't Be Too Far Away

I just know Spring can't be too far away. My daffodils have been blooming for 2 1/2 weeks now. They are blooming better than they ever have. I think that's because my husband really kept the bushes trimmed back and it helped them show off more. In previous years they haven't done this well because the bushes crowded them out. We have had such beautiful days and today I took advantage of that by walking around the yard. I found that my hyacinths are also popping up and a couple of them are in full bloom. I always find it exciting to see the flowers coming up as Spring gets closer.

Today I started preparing for the retreat next week by cutting out the fabric for the Countdown to Christmas mini quilt our group plans to do. I also worked some on the crocheted baby blanket I have had going. I also washed the flannel and the fabric for a jacket that Karen will teach us at the March 3rd Saturday.

Renegade Quilters

I met with the "Renegades", yep, that's right "Renegades". It's a small group that I enjoy very much. We met yesterday, with some of us working on the "Great Pumpkin Patch", a Christmas project and of course some UFO's. One of the girls brought 6 finished quilt tops to give to her quilter. Here I am retired and this gal who works, brings in 6 finished tops. What am I going to do? I guess I better get busy. We have such a great time together we laugh, we cry and just get along beautifully. Oh, and we eat too. (of course). We are having a retreat in about a week and a half. We have so much fun on these retreats. We plan to work on some of our Christmas projects so that maybe we will have Christmas gifts done when Christmas comes around. It seems all of us rush around at the last minute trying to get those gifts done. This year our plan is to get them done early. (At least I think that's what we are trying to do, lol). Oh, did I mention we are going to be in the movies. lol. A daughter of one of the ladies will bring her crew with cameras to film us as a documentary she is doing. You can bet we will be on our best behavior. (maybe). Til, next time, happy quilting.

3RD Saturday Quilt Day

We had a 3rd Saturday all day quilt day today and I thoroughly enjoy being with the gals. I worked on "It's A Wrap" quilt that was featured in the Nov/Dec issue of Quiltmaker magazine. So far I have 5 blocks done. Not sure if I will make it lap size or larger yet. I think it will depend on when I get tired of making the blocks. LOL. It's really a colorful quilt and a good way to use up some of my Christmas fabric stash.

On 3rd Saturday we usually have someone to be in charge of the lunch and those that want to will bring something to go with the main dish. Today we had fried potatoes with hot dogs and sauerkraut with hot dogs. Of course there were plenty of desserts to go with lunch. Believe me lunch was very good.

Denim Jacket Embroidery

Today I decided to play with some machine embroidery on a denim jacket I have had for awhile now. My thoughts are that if I dressed it up a little, it would feel like a new jacket to me. With Spring coming up on us, I went with a butterfly theme. Right now I have only done something on the back. Now I think I will sit back and think if I want to do more on this jacket or leave it as is. It's ideal as this jacket was without any designs. I might put a butterfly on the collar corners or somewhere on a sleeve. But I want to think about it before I jump into doing something else.

I;ve Got My Eyes On You

My daughter-in-law sent me the latest pictures of her Grandson (my Great Grandson). The first one I call it "I've Got My Eyes On You. It gives me joy in my heart just looking at this picture. It really gets my day started. He is 3 months now. He is a gift from heaven and I will enjoy watching him grow. He is so precious. Our first Great Grandson is 4 months now. The babies are cousins and it will be fun to watch them together.

with the Cardinal puzzle that is. I finished the puzzle last night. It was not an easy puzzle as there were not square corners, so it was hard to tell if a piece was a border or the inside of the puzzle. Also so many of the colors such as the reds, greeens and the whites it made it hard to tell where it was going. Once I got in a roll last night, I continued to work on it and by 12:30 a.m. I had it done.
It was relaxing and it made a nice break from my sewing.

As you can see to the right my bookshelf and that I am a big fan of Debbie MaComber. The one book of Geraldine Brooks title March was given to me as a Christmas present. I will read other books other than Debbie Macomber's, but I tend to like her for the easy reading and it helps me to fall asleep when reading at bedtime. It is a great relaxer when going to bed to read.

Oklahoma Stormy Weather

The weather conditions were just right for the storms to occur here in Oklahoma. Things started jumping about 2:30 yesterday afternoon and jump they did. As far as I know,five tornadoes jumped around our State. We were fortunate as the storms traveled West of us and went North. The storms came one right after the other and seemed to be traveling the same path. Buildings were destroyed, trees and electric lines came down. The storms that hit by Waterloo Road and Broadway are two miles away where my son and family live. They are all safe. They had some debris in their front yard, but they did not have any damage. Further South in the State and in the evening a tornado 3/4 mile wide hit a town of Lone Grove, where 9 people were killed and the winds were 170 mph. It is sad to think of people losing their home, but another thing that people lost their lives. This all makes me realize that God has blessed me in many ways. I count my blessing everyday and that reminds me of a quilt I did called "Blessings" which is on my bed everyday.
